Physical Damage
What Is Physical Damage Insurance for Trucks?
Physical damage insurance is the coverage that protects your truck itself. In personal auto insurance this is often called “full coverage,” but in the trucking industry it is referred to as physical damage coverage.
While truckers liability insurance covers damage you cause to other people or their property, physical damage coverage protects the value of your own truck if it is damaged in an accident or other covered event.
For owner-operators and trucking companies, a truck is one of the most valuable business assets. Physical damage insurance helps protect that investment.
At Protec Consulting Group, we work with trucking companies across Texas and throughout the United States to help them understand how physical damage coverage works and how it protects their business.
What Does Physical Damage Insurance Cover?
Physical damage insurance helps pay for repairs or replacement of your truck if it is damaged due to events such as:
- Collisions with other vehicles
- Accidents on the road
- Fire damage
- Theft or vandalism
- Certain weather-related events
If the truck is repairable, the policy helps cover the cost of repairs. If the damage is severe and the truck is considered a total loss, the insurance company may pay the insured value of the truck (depending on the terms of the policy).
Most physical damage policies also include a towing and storage limit.
For example:
- Many policies include $5,000 towing coverage
- This helps cover the cost of towing the truck from the accident scene to a storage yard or repair facility
If you believe the towing limit is too low, you can request that your insurance agent increase that limit when setting up the policy.
How Much Does Physical Damage Insurance Cost?
Physical damage insurance is usually priced based on the value of the truck being insured.
A common rule of thumb in the trucking industry is that the annual premium is approximately 5% of the truck’s insured value.
For example:
- Truck value: $100,000
- Estimated annual physical damage premium: about $5,000
The actual price can vary depending on factors such as:
- Driver history
- Type of truck
- Usage of the vehicle
- Deductible selected on the policy
Who Handles a Physical Damage Claim?
If your truck is involved in an accident or suffers damage, an insurance adjuster will handle the claim.
The adjuster is responsible for:
- Investigating the accident
- Determining whether the claim is covered
- Evaluating the amount of damage
If the truck is determined to be a total loss, the adjuster may approve a payment based on the insured value of the truck.
What Documents Are Needed for a Claim?
When filing a physical damage claim, several documents may be required.
Common documents include:
Driver Statement
The driver should write a statement explaining what happened during the accident. The statement should include the driver’s name, date of birth, and driver’s license number.
Police Report
After an accident, police will often provide a report number. You must contact the police department with that report number to obtain the full police report.
Vehicle Registration
Proof of vehicle ownership and registration may also be required.
Do Truckers Need Physical Damage Coverage?
Physical damage insurance is not legally required if you own your truck outright. However, if you have a loan on your truck, the finance company will require you to carry physical damage coverage.
Even if it is not required by law, physical damage insurance is strongly recommended. Without it, if your truck is destroyed in an accident or fire, you may have to cover the entire loss out of pocket.
What Is a Loss Payee?
If your truck is financed, the lender will require a document called a loss payee endorsement.
This means:
- The lender is listed on the physical damage policy as a loss payee
- The lender may also be listed on the liability policy as an additional insured
The loss payee document typically includes the VIN of the truck, confirming that the financed vehicle is properly insured.
