Do You Actually Need an MC Number?
You need an MC number if:
- You haul freight for hire (you get paid to move someone else's goods)
- You work as an owner-operator for a carrier (not leased to a carrier, but for-hire)
- You operate for-hire interstate commerce
You do NOT need an MC number if:
- You haul private goods (your own materials, your own company's products)
- You lease to a carrier (the carrier holds the authority)
- You operate only intrastate (within one state) — check with your state DOT

Step 2: Get Your MC Number Through FMCSA
What you'll need:
- Your USDOT number (from Step 1)
- Proof of identity (driver's license)
- Proof of business structure (LLC certificate, articles of incorporation, DBA registration)
- List of all owners/officers and their SSNs (for background checks)
- Motor Carrier number application fee (~$300–$500, depending on your state)
How to apply online (fastest method):
- Go back to https://portal.fmcsa.dot.gov
- Log in with your account
- Select "Apply for Motor Carrier Number"
- Enter your USDOT number
- Fill in your company details (name, address, insurance info, operating authority type)

Step 3: Proof of Insurance

- Form BMC-91 (Certificate of Public Liability Insurance) from your insurance company
Pro tip: Insurance companies WON'T quote you until you have an MC number in-hand or a pending application with a confirmation number. This creates a chicken-and-egg problem. Solution: Start the MC application, get your confirmation number, then apply for insurance.

Step 4: Background Check & Review
FMCSA will do a background check on all owners/officers listed on your application. This includes:
- Criminal history (disqualifying felonies exist; drug trafficking, fraud, etc.)
- Driving record (serious violations can delay or deny approval)
- Prior regulatory violations (if you've had a USDOT before)
Timeline: 2–8 weeks depending on whether issues come up
If there's a problem: FMCSA will send you a letter explaining why and what you need to fix. You then have time to respond.
Step 5: Approval & Your MC Number
When approved, FMCSA will:

Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Forgetting the USDOT number first
You cannot get an MC number without a USDOT. Get USDOT first, then MC.
2. Applying for insurance before you have your MC confirmation
Insurers won't quote until you have an MC number or a pending application with a confirmation. Start the MC app, wait for the confirmation number, then call for insurance quotes.
3. Listing the wrong operation type
