Most of our clients have insurance on the truck, the trailer, the cargo and the house. Far fewer have it on the one thing all of that depends on: the person driving. If you are an owner-operator or you run a small business, your family is probably living on your income โ and the truck note, the mortgage and the business debts do not stop when the paychecks do. That is the job life insurance does.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Why It Matters When One Income Carries Everything
Ask a simple question: if you were gone tomorrow, what would your family have to pay, and where would the money come from?
- ๐ The truck or equipment loan โ the lender still expects the payment, and a truck that sits loses value fast.
- ๐ The mortgage or rent โ so the family can stay in the home.
- ๐ต Everyday living costs โ groceries, utilities, car payments, school.
- ๐งพ Business debts โ lines of credit, cards, loans you signed personally.
- ๐ Final expenses โ the funeral and the bills that arrive afterward.
Self-employed people usually have no life insurance through an employer, and coverage that comes with a job often ends when the job does. If nobody has set anything up, the answer to "where would the money come from" is often "nowhere."
โ๏ธ Term vs. Permanent Life, in Plain Terms
Term life
Term life covers you for a set number of years โ for example 10, 20 or 30. If you pass away during that time, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If the term ends and you are still here, the coverage ends too. It is built for a specific stretch of time: while the kids are young, while the truck or the house is being paid off. For the same amount of coverage, term generally costs less than permanent insurance, which is why many families start there.
Permanent life (whole life and universal life)
Permanent life is designed to last your whole life as long as the policy is kept in force. Many permanent policies also build cash value over time that you may be able to borrow against. It costs more for the same death benefit, and it fits needs that do not go away โ final expenses, leaving something behind, or certain business plans.
Neither one is "better." The right fit depends on what you are trying to protect and for how long, and some people use a mix of both.
๐งฎ How People Think About the Amount
There is no single right number, but most people build it from a few pieces:
- ๐ผ Income replacement โ how many years of your income would your family need to get back on their feet, or until the kids are grown?
- ๐ Debts โ the truck note, mortgage, business loans and cards you would not want to leave behind.
- ๐ Future goals โ school for the kids, or keeping the business running long enough to sell it properly.
- ๐ Final expenses โ funeral and end-of-life costs.
- โ Minus what you already have โ savings, other policies, assets that could be sold.
Revisit it when life changes: a new baby, a new truck, a new house, a new partner in the business.
๐ข Business Uses: Key Person and Buy-Sell
- ๐ Key person coverage โ the business insures someone it cannot easily replace (often the owner, or the one who brings in the customers). If that person dies, the money helps the business cover lost income, pay debts, or hire and train a replacement.
- ๐ค Buy-sell funding โ when a business has partners, a buy-sell agreement says what happens to a partner's share if they die. Life insurance can provide the money for the surviving partners to buy that share from the family, so the family is paid fairly and the business stays with the people running it.
These plans involve legal agreements and tax questions. We handle the insurance side; the agreement itself and the tax treatment are for your attorney and your tax professional.
๐ What the Application Involves
- ๐ฉบ Health questions โ medical history, medications, height and weight, tobacco use.
- ๐งช Sometimes an exam โ depending on your age, the amount and the carrier, a short exam (often at your home or office) may be required. Some policies can be issued without one.
- ๐ Lifestyle and job questions โ your occupation, driving record, and activities.
- ๐ช Beneficiaries โ who receives the money. Keep this up to date after a marriage, divorce or new child.
- ๐ชช ID and basic personal information.
The carrier reviews everything before deciding whether to offer coverage and on what terms. Answer every question honestly and completely โ a wrong answer can cause problems for your family later.
