Dump truck insurance in California

What dump truck owners in California need: filings, coverages, what underwriters check and real costs from a licensed bilingual agency.

USGS ranks California second only to Texas in construction sand and gravel, so dump trucks here run steady aggregate miles, but under rules Texas does not have. A for-hire dump truck needs a Motor Carrier Permit, a CA number from the CHP and an MC 65 M showing $750,000, with no lower state floor to fall back on. Then come the engine rules. CARB's Truck and Bus Regulation requires nearly all diesel trucks over 14,000 pounds GVWR to have 2010 or newer engines, and DMV registration is tied to it. Clean Truck Check adds reporting and periodic testing. Three-axle trucks are limited to 55 mph on California highways, and workers' comp proof applies even if only family drives for you.

Dump trucks and end dumps move dirt, sand, gravel, crushed stone and asphalt from pits, quarries and supply yards to job sites. The work is usually local or regional, with many short loads a day, loose jobsite ground and a raised bed that changes how the truck handles. That mix is why insurance for dirt, sand and gravel haulers is rated differently from long-haul freight.

What it costs

Across 20 policies Protec sold in 2026, commercial auto liability for this type of truck ran about $11,300 to $15,300 per truck per year, with a middle of $13,700. That's before taxes and fees, mostly from new and small Texas carriers, so your state and record can move it. It isn't a quote.

Filings in California

Running in California? You need a Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) from the California DMV. For-hire carriers need it for any motor vehicle, regardless of type or size, according to the CHP. Private carriers generally need it for a truck of two or more axles rated over 10,000 pounds GVWR, truck tractors, and certain other vehicles. Before the permit, you get a CA number from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) by filing a Motor Carrier Profile (CHP 362).

Minimum liability (combined single limit): $300,000 for non-hazardous property in vehicles of 10,000 pounds GVWR or less, and $750,000 for vehicles of 10,001 pounds or more. Hazmat requires $1,000,000 to $5,000,000.

Filings: your insurance company provides the Certificate of Insurance (MC 65 M). You also prove workers' compensation or sign an exemption statement, even if you employ only family. DMV may suspend the MCP if liability or workers' comp lapses.

If you cross state lines, the federal rules apply. A for-hire carrier of general freight in interstate commerce with vehicles of 10,001 pounds GVWR or more needs at least $750,000 under 49 CFR 387.9. The policy carries the MCS-90 endorsement, and your insurance company, not you, files the BMC-91 or BMC-91X with FMCSA. Hazmat limits run higher.

The limit is the same $750,000 for most heavier trucks, but the BMC-91 goes to FMCSA and does not replace the MC 65 M filing with DMV.
