Dump truck insurance in Texas

What dump truck owners in Texas need: filings, coverages, what underwriters check and real costs from a licensed bilingual agency.

The U.S. Geological Survey lists Texas first in the nation for construction sand and gravel, so a Texas dump truck often lives between a pit and a job site. A tandem dump usually runs over 26,000 pounds, which means a TxDMV number and a Form E showing at least $500,000 when the work stays in Texas. That number is only the state floor. General contractors can write higher limits into the sub agreement, so read it before you buy. TxDOT aggregate contracts can also carry their own terms; ones we reviewed limit haul roads to legal loads and set weekday daylight delivery. Move one load across the Red River and the federal $750,000 minimum and MC filing come into play.

Dump trucks and end dumps move dirt, sand, gravel, crushed stone and asphalt from pits, quarries and supply yards to job sites. The work is usually local or regional, with many short loads a day, loose jobsite ground and a raised bed that changes how the truck handles. That mix is why insurance for dirt, sand and gravel haulers is rated differently from long-haul freight.

What it costs

Across 20 policies Protec sold in 2026, commercial auto liability for this type of truck ran about $11,300 to $15,300 per truck per year, with a middle of $13,700. That's before taxes and fees, mostly from new and small Texas carriers, so your state and record can move it. It isn't a quote.

Filings in Texas

Staying inside Texas? Your state authority is the TxDMV number, a certificate of registration from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Motor Carrier Division. You need it when a vehicle or combination exceeds 26,000 pounds by gross weight, registered weight or weight rating. You also need it to haul household goods for pay at any weight, or to haul placarded hazmat. Get your USDOT number first, then apply through TxDMV.

Minimum liability: $500,000 for private or for-hire carriers over 26,000 pounds. Household goods movers under 26,000 pounds need $300,000 plus cargo coverage. Placarded hazmat needs $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 depending on the material.

Who files: your insurance company files the Form E electronically with TxDMV. Forms H and I prove household goods cargo coverage, and Form K reports a cancellation.

If you cross state lines, the federal rules apply. A for-hire carrier of general freight in interstate commerce with vehicles of 10,001 pounds GVWR or more needs at least $750,000 under 49 CFR 387.9. The policy carries the MCS-90 endorsement, and your insurance company, not you, files the BMC-91 or BMC-91X with FMCSA. Hazmat limits run higher.

Coverages to ask about

  • Primary auto liability
  • Physical damage on the truck and dump body
  • General liability for jobsite work
  • Motor truck cargo, when a contract or the load calls for it
  • Workers' compensation or occupational accident, depending on how drivers are paid

What underwriters look at

  • Radius of operation and where the truck is garaged
  • Materials hauled and how many loads per day
  • Driver records and experience with dump equipment
  • Loss runs, especially rollover and backing claims
  • Whether you work direct for contractors or as a sub
